Coastal Carolina: The Outer Banks

← All Travelogues

The Outer Banks stretch along North Carolina's coast as a ribbon of barrier islands shaped by wind, tide, and centuries of history. Cape Hatteras National Seashore protects miles of wild coastline dominated by the iconic black-and-white spiral lighthouse — the tallest brick lighthouse in America and one of the most dramatic structures on the Eastern Seaboard.

David McCullough's The Wright Brothers serves as the literary companion, and Kitty Hawk is a centerpiece of the journey — the windswept site where two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio changed human history on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brothers' story is one of American ingenuity at its most inspiring.

The journey continues to historic Roanoke Island, site of the Lost Colony of 1587, with its haunting Elizabethan Gardens; the atmospheric island community of Ocracoke, accessible only by ferry; and the full sweep of a coast that has been shaping American history since the first English settlers arrived.
